Chief Technology Officer: security operations, infrastructure and software for 314 employees across eight locations; 99.993% uptime since 2023 on a $750K annual IT budget.

Sole responder for a 314-person estate

Malco Enterprises of Nevada runs Budget Rent A Car of Las Vegas: eight locations, 314 employees, roughly 5,600 rental transactions a day. I am the Chief Technology Officer and, for security operations, the entire response function. There is no SOC to escalate to; detection, triage, investigation and the write-up all land on one desk.

That shapes everything below. Tools are chosen for what one person can actually operate and tune, not for what looks good on an architecture diagram.

Detection and response

The detection stack runs in production across all eight sites:

On the Windows and Azure estate, Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Sentinel carry endpoint and cloud detection. The ongoing work there is less about deploying and more about tuning: suppressing false positives without quietly losing the signal underneath them. An alert pipeline one person cannot keep up with is an alert pipeline nobody reads.

When an endpoint is compromised or suspect, I run the forensic investigation myself: acquisition, analysis, root cause, and a written finding.

Compliance and the network

I own PCI DSS compliance across every payment-processing system: recurring audits, vulnerability remediation cycles, and defending a live cardholder data environment. That is the constraint most decisions get measured against.

The network is mine end to end: SD-WAN across the eight sites, Cisco IOS, VLAN segmentation, PoE, firewall policy, VPN infrastructure and intrusion monitoring. Active Directory and Group Policy for all 314 users sit on the same desk: provisioning, access control, policy hardening, and recurring Active Directory and Microsoft 365 security audits.

Through all of it: 99.993% uptime since 2023, on a $750K annual IT budget.

The software that runs the business

The security work sits on top of an application stack I architected and still operate. It replaced paper processes company-wide:

Built on Node.js, Express and MongoDB behind Nginx with load balancing on DigitalOcean Kubernetes.

Maverik (C#/.NET) is an API wrapper over the mainframe rental platform's Bluezone HLLAPI interface; it improved operational efficiency on those workflows by 85%. The internal Python tier runs FastAPI services, Celery and Redis job queues monitored with Flower, and SQLAlchemy/Alembic migrations. Cloud infrastructure is managed as code in Terraform, with CI/CD across six self-hosted GitHub Actions runners spanning two organizations.

Most recently I built internal Model Context Protocol servers that put the rental, fleet-reporting and rate-management SQL Server databases behind a typed, agent-callable interface, so operational questions get answered without handing anyone direct database credentials.
